Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May 1,1865 in Charleston, South Carolina to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp.  The bodies were dug up and the former slaves worked for two weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom.  Then a parade of 10,000 people, led by 2,800 Black children, marched, sang and celebrated.   Abstrakt Goldsmith/The Blue Street Journal

Memorial Day Crosses Removed After Complaint

A Memorial Day display featuring crosses to honor fallen soldiers was removed from public property in Georgia after someone questioned whether the soldiers were all Christian.  The 79 white, handmade crosses posted on public property along state Highway 92 in Hiram, Georgia were meant to represent the 79 Paulding County residents who died in America’s wars, according to town officials.  When someone called Hiram City Hall and questioned the display, the crosses were abruptly taken down.  “It was never about religion,” said Hiram’s mayor, “It was just to honor them.”   FoxNews.com

“This table is reserved to honor our missing comrade in arms.  The tablecloth is white–symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call of duty. The single red rose, displayed in a vase, reminds us of the life of each of the missing and their loved ones and friends of these Americans who keep the faith, awaiting answers.  The vase is tied with yellow ribbon, a symbol of our continued determination to account for our missing.  A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by those missing and their families who seek answers.  A slice of lemon on the plate reminds us of their bitter fate.  The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.  The glass is inverted–to symbolize their inability to share this evening’s toast.  The chair is empty–they are missing.”

Dying Vietnam vet asks for final meeting with beloved horses outside hospital

Vietnam veteran Roberto Gonzalez’s final wish was granted Saturday when he was reunited with his beloved horses — Ringo and Sugar — outside of a Texas VA hospital.

Gonzalez, of Premont, Texas, who was shot and paralyzed during the war, was wheeled outside the front doors of Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital in San Antonio where he was greeted by the horses he had raised for decades, mySA.com reported.

Gonzalez, who was one of the hospital’s first patients when it opened in 1974, had asked his family to see his horses one last time. The family passed along the request to hospital staff who gladly obliged. Ringo and Sugar then made the 150-mile trip to the hospital to see him.

“Horses are his life,” his wife, Rosario Gonzalez, told KABB. “We’ve been training and raising horses for 30, 40 years.”

The South Texas Veterans Health Care System posted a photo of the meeting on its Facebook page on Sunday, calling Gonzalez a great American and identifying him as one of the first patients at the hospital.

“A heartfelt Thank you, to all at Audie L. Murphy V A Hospital,” Rosario Gonzalez posted in response. “A special thank you to the spinal cord staff, all of you became a part of our family.

“The care you have been giving my husband and to me goes above and beyond,” she wrote. “You are our angels God Bless you all.”

Gonzalez reportedly learned that his kidneys and liver were failing when he recently visited the hospital for a back wound.

“He never let his injuries slow him down. He loved horses, he loved cattle, he loved ranching and farming. He was proud to serve his country,” Rosario Gonzalez told ABC affiliate KSAT.

Gonzalez’s May 21 visit with the horses came 46 years to the day after he was wounded in Vietnam. His wife told local media stations that her husband was one of the only licensed, handicapped horse trainers in Texas.

“When the horse came up to him he actually opened his eyes. They came up to him and I think they were actually kissing him,” Gonzalez told News4SA.com.

Vet Robs Bank to Receive Healthcare

Some people who cannot afford healthcare just go to the emergency room. Joseph Cyrus, a 77 year old US Army veteran at the time, was turned down by a VA hospital, so he used a toy gun to rob a bank in order to go to jail and get the care he needed.  “I wanted to be caught,” Cyrus said from his wheelchair in court.  “I wanted to get help from the United States Government.”   InfoWars/Sputnik

“Excluding the Christian Science Monitor and USA Today, there has been a virtual mainstream media blackout regarding the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) recent investigation of the VA–an investigation which shows that wait time manipulation continues to be a problem for those serving veterans.”  Roger Arnoff/Canada Free Press

Pearl Harbor Remains Identified After 75 Years

Previously buried as “unknowns,” the bodies of five men who perished when the USS Oklahoma was sunk at Pearl Harbor, have been identified.  The battleship’s loss of life was second only to the 1100 souls who perished aboard the USS Arizona, which remains a historic site at Pearl Harbor.  The men identified are Chief Petty Officer Albert E. Hayden, 44 of Mechanicsville, MD; Ensign Lewis S. Stockade 27, of Anaconda, MT; Seaman 2nd Class Dale F. Pearce, 21, of KS; Petty Officer 1st Class Vernon T. Luke, 43 of Green Bay, WI; and Chief Petty Officer Duff Gordon, 52, of Hudson, WI. The Pentagon said that it wants to return as many remains as it can to the families.  The Washington Post

House Measure Requires Women Register for Draft

The House Armed Services Committee approved, by a narrow margin, an amendment to a defense bill to require that women register for the draft.  Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), a former Marine, proposed the amendment, but now says that he disagrees.  He said that his generation has not seen the kind of warfare where bodies need to be replaced, which in his opinion, is the reason for a draft.  Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) a retired USAF fighter pilot, approves of the amendment. She pointed out that there are plenty of useful non-combat missions to be filled.  NBC News/Associated Press

Political Correctness and the Wussification of the Military

A Heritage Foundation’s 2016 index of US military strength report scored our military “only marginally able” and trending toward “weak” to defend the United States.  This extremely poor score couldn’t come at a more dangerous time, considering the same analysis also reports a rise in threats to US vital interests.  Brown accuses the military’s social experimentation for a “squishy” military. Green Beret Will Stay

Angry Atheists

Angry atheists are now trying to ban the Bible from displays honoring veterans.  Mikey Weinstein and his vitriolic Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF)–which view the Bible as a symbol of “religious oppression”–have forced three VA hospitals and a military base to ban the Bible from “Missing Man” displays.  MRFF extremists call Christians “monsters who terrorize” and constantly attack the religious liberty of the brave men and women in our armed forces.  Jay Sekulow/ACLJ Chief Counsel
